What is metabolism?

Metabolism is the amount of energy ( calories) your body burns to fuel itself.   That means even at rest you are burning energy or calories.  The rate depends on many factors.

What influences metabolism?

Your metabolism is influenced by numerous factors.   The most effective way of increasing your metabolic rate is to increase your lean muscle and body composition ( lean muscle to fat ratio).  Lean muscle  is more metabolically active and burns more calories than fat weight.  A lean  or more muscular person will  have a higher metabolism and thus burn more calories at rest.

How can I increase my metabolism?

Begin to exercise with strength training and follow an optimal eating plan to balance blood sugar.  In any new health regime , make sure to see your doctor & naturopathic doctor for the green light to begin. . Resistance training in which you are using weights to resist certain movements( ie lifting weights, using resistance  bands or hand weights) work well.   You can also increase your metabolism by doing cardio at least 3 days a week for  30 minutes in your training heart rate zone ( THR).  Your THR is calculated by (220-age ) X 0.7-0.8.  For example a 40 year old would have a THR of 220-40=180X.7-.8=126-144.

I never gained weight until I reached 30, What happened?

After the age of 30 , your body gradually begins to lose it’s muscle via hormonal changes. With the reduction of lean muscle comes a reduced need for calories to fuel your body.   If your activity level remains the same and the amount of calories you eat remains the same, you will naturally gain weight because of the reduced metabolism.  Thus the combination of  increasing  your lean muscle by strength and resistance training and a menu that is custom to you,  is most important.

What are the signs of a slow metabolism?

Because the rate of metabolism is managed by the thyroid gland.  Low thyroid function symptoms include: fatigue, feeling cold, dry skin, constipation, slow pulse, difficulty loosing weight, PMS and low blood pressure.  If you experience any of the above it is important to have a proper assessment done.

What about low calorie diets?

If you eat a very low calorie diet, your body will actually slow down your metabolism in order for the body to survive.  Research shows that extremely low calorie diets create a rebound affect where you then can crave more as this restriction is removed and ultimately gain more weight overall.

If my weight has gone up or down over the years what has happened to my metabolism?

Ultimately if your historical approach has resulted in a loss of lean muscle and an increase of body fat, then there is a high likelihood that your metabolism has slowed down.

What role does genetics play on metabolism?

Everyone is influenced by their genetics and has a different bone structure and body type ( mesomorph, ectomorph, endomorph or combination).  Your metabolism, body composition however is influenced by your environment
